Weddings at the Rainbow Room

The Rainbow Room opened in 1934 on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and it is still one of the great rooms of New York. A domed ceiling lit from its edge, a crystal chandelier, tall windows over the city and a round parquet dance floor give a wedding here the glamour of the Art Deco age, high above Midtown.

Two views of the Rainbow Room. On the left, a crystal chandelier hangs from the domed ceiling above tall windows. On the right, the mirrored wall, small chandeliers and the round parquet dance floor.

What makes the Rainbow Room special

The room was designed by Wallace K. Harrison in the Streamlined Modern style, and it has been a New York landmark since 2012. Its double-height ceiling and windows that run from floor to ceiling give it a sense of height and light that very few ballrooms have. Little needs to be added: the work is to choose flowers, linen and lighting that let the room, the view and the dance floor do the talking.

The ballroomCeremony, dinner, dancing

A domed ceiling with a soft glow around its edge, a crystal chandelier at its centre and tall windows on every side. Tiered seating around the room gives a long view of the round dance floor. It suits a seated dinner with dancing.

The mirrored wall and stageCocktails, a feature wall

Mirrored panels, small chandeliers and a raised stage with its own light make a natural place for a bar, a band or a feature design. Mirrors double every candle and flower, so we plan the lighting carefully.

A planner’s notes on The Rainbow Room

Let the room lead

With a ceiling, a chandelier and a view like this, restraint wins. We choose flowers, lighting and linen to sit within the room, so nothing competes with it.

Plan for the light

The windows face the city, so the room changes from afternoon sun to evening glow. We time the ceremony, the dinner and the first dance to it.

A high-rise venue has its own logistics

Everything arrives by elevator, with set times for load-in and a building’s rules for guests, vendors and security. We learn them early and write the timeline around them.

Confirm the details with the venue

Capacities, hours, music and approved vendors are set by the venue and change with the layout. We are glad to help with that first conversation.
