Manhattan, from 42nd Street to the Financial District

Weddings at Cipriani

Cipriani holds some of the most dramatic rooms in New York: banking halls built when banks wanted to look like cathedrals. Cipriani 42nd Street is the former Bowery Savings Bank across from Grand Central; Cipriani Wall Street fills the colonnaded Merchants’ Exchange at 55 Wall Street; Cipriani 25 Broadway is the domed Great Hall of the Cunard Building; and Cipriani South Street sits in the Battery Maritime Building on the water. Each is a wedding for hundreds, with the Cipriani kitchen and service that come with the name.

What makes Cipriani special

Scale, and the confidence of the architecture. Ceilings five and six storeys high, marble columns and painted domes do what a lesser room would need a great deal of décor to attempt. The design work here is not to fill the room but to bring it down to the height of the people in it: light, tables and flowers that make a hall for a thousand feel like a dinner for one family.

A planner’s notes on Cipriani

Choosing between the halls

The four halls differ more than their name suggests. 42nd Street is the warmest and most Romanesque, Wall Street the most classical, 25 Broadway the most ornate, South Street the only one on the water. The right one follows from the guest count and the feeling of the evening, not the address.

The house has its own way

Cipriani brings its own kitchen and service, and much of the evening follows the house’s rhythm. Knowing it before the contract is signed is what keeps the design free.

Light is the design

In rooms this tall, lighting decides whether a hall feels grand or empty. We design the light first, and the flowers and tables with it.
